article response
1. Crosbie article
a. According to Crosbie's article on what New Media is, my capstone project is partially New Media, (depending on my final layout of my installation). His characteristics for defining New Media are : 1) the individual messages can simultaneously be delivered to an infinite number of people 2) and that each of the people involved share reciprocal control over that content. In order to fall more precisely under this definition, I would have to allow for the viewer to have more control over what happens in the installation so that the message I want to deliver is drastically more individualized for each person.
b. I understood Crosbie's "hallmark characteristics" and think they are valid, but I feel that they are limited towards a certain aspect of New Media, which is focused on community developed projects. While these are important in New Media, I do not believe that community based projects solely define New Media.
2. Henry Jenkins' Eight traits
a. My capstone project measures a bit higher under Jenkins' eight traits of New Media. He says "the focus should not be on emerging technologies but on emerging cultural practices." I found this relevant to my project where as my project does involve technologies, but the focus is on the social/cultural issue at hand that pertains to a global population. My project may not fall under each specific trait he describes, but one thing I know I would have to do is to work on networking this project more. To get more people involved, so it is not just a one time installation but also turn it into something else as well perhaps a web site where people all over the world could access it at any time.
b. I do agree with the points Jenkins makes, however I agree with Jon that the convergent trait is misleading, and I'm not sure I even completely understand the unequal trait. However, some of the points he brings up are hard to argue by any means, especially when he states "we can no more see the layer of media that surrounds us than fish notice the water they are swimming in."
"stuck" storyboard

This section of video will be a revolving scene that is somewhat monotonous giving the sense that you are stuck in the same place going around in circles and you can't escape.
"certainty" storyboard

The "certainty" video will include images of routine: an alarm clock, tying your shoes, getting dressed, etc. These scenes will be cut with images of the camera moving forward with distracting events off to the side, giving a sense that nothing can stop where you are going.
"chaotic" storyboard

Images included in this video panel will be a rapidly changing rubik's cube, blinking eyes to provoke a continuous second guessing of decisions.
Rendering

A new rendering...still the same back wall playing different videos. The "chaotic" hallway has panels, like obstacles creating confusion as the viewer travels. A new hallway representing being stuck in an unwanted place. This would be a very narrow passageway with cracks and holes where you could look out at the other hallways. And the third hallway is still the straight and narrow path representing a clear, certain path in life.
Visual approach 2

This is another visual approach illustrating where to enter and how people will interact.
Text based proposal
Abstract
The purpose of this proposal is to create a video installation that will concentrate on the uncertainty of life and the decisions the one makes during their life. I will create an atmosphere in which the viewer will have two different entrances to “enter the piece.” The hallways will consist of a straight/narrow barrier and a curvy/zig-zag like barrier, with a video playing on a common back wall, which brings the different atmospheres together into one.
Why?
The majority of my peers, including myself, are at a point in our lives where the choices, decisions we make will affect our lives significantly. While some will know exactly where they will be in ten years, others do not. This is a critical time as we graduate college and move on to another phase of our lives. I want to create a video installation that will relate to my personal life as well as others. I want viewers to react and connect to the constant changing in the world around each and every one of us.
Where
Video art is a fairly recent form of art. Its origins are said to begin with the use of a Sony Portapak by Nam June Paik, who video taped Pope Paul VI's procession through New York City in the fall of 1965. That same day he played these tapes back in a café across town. This event was supposedly the origins of video art. Nam June Paik was a pioneer artist in video art and installation. In the 1960’s Paik created the first multi-monitor installation and continued to create and experiment with video and installations.
With the growing use of video installation as an art form. I wish to use this new media to create a piece that will relate to my peers presently. Using video and other technologies will communicate my thoughts and ideas to viewers.

What
1. The Environment
The space will have two different entrances, which bring you down different hallways concluding at a common back wall (in a V shape form), which is displaying the video. One hallway will be a straight narrow path the other will be a curved/zig zaggy hallway. The different environments will be looking at different videos at first, once the viewer moves to the back wall then both videos will be visible. The point of having two different hallways is to evoke different emotions and thoughts about where the viewer is going and what might be coming up next.
2. The technological aspects
Within the constructed space, room will be built in to accommodate two projectors, projecting onto different sides of the back wall.

a parti

This parti is a little different than my previous ones. The image is almost a photoshop/metaphorish version of the rendering I made in the previous post. The child scratching his head is the "viewer," the red side is a swirl of chaos representing one hallway and the green is a decisive path representing the other hallway.
Logo: Second Thoughts

This is a possible logo for my installation which I've decided to call Second Thoughts. The grid like design is representative of paths and going different directions, however they don't appear in a complete grid which is they whole theme of my project of not knowing the direction you're headed.
Rendering of Installation structure

This is a rendering of what I want the structure to look like. There are 2 hallways that are very different, one is a straight and narrow path "focused," the other is curvy, chaotic "undecided."
